Product Description

The Panther Grouper is a striking saltwater predator known for its white body covered in bold black spots, resembling the coat of a panther. This fast-growing and hardy species makes a dramatic centerpiece in large fish-only or predator tanks, but is best suited for experienced aquarists due to its adult size and appetite.

Description:

Common Name: Panther Grouper

Scientific Name: Cromileptes altivelis

Family: Serranidae

Size: Up to 27 inches (68 cm)

Temperament: Aggressive

Difficulty: Moderate

Reef Safe: No

Native Region:

Panther Groupers are native to the Indo-Pacific region, particularly around coral-rich lagoons and seaward reefs, where they ambush smaller fish and invertebrates.

Aquarium Setup:

Tank Size: Minimum of 300 gallons (adults)

Temperature: 74-80°F (23-27°C)

pH: 8.0-8.4

Salinity: 1.023-1.025

Substrate: Live rock for structure and shaded hiding spaces; ensure ample swimming room.

Additional Tips:

Rapid Growth: Juveniles grow quickly and require frequent tank upgrades or a large tank from the start.

Compatibility: Best kept with other large, aggressive fish; will eat smaller tank mates, including ornamental shrimp and fish.

Diet: Carnivorous; feed large meaty foods like silversides, squid, krill, and enriched frozen marine preparations.

Behavior: Can become the dominant fish in the tank; ensure secure rockwork to prevent toppling from its size and movement.
